What an M3U Playlist Is
M3U is a playlist file format. In IPTV, it's used to list all of the channels and streams available to your subscription in one file, which your IPTV player app reads and turns into a browsable channel list. It's one of two common ways to connect a player to a subscription — the other being Xtream Codes.
What an M3U File Contains
An M3U file is plain text. Each entry typically includes a stream address, a display name, and often a channel logo and category grouping. You don't need to read or edit this file yourself — your player app parses it automatically and presents it as a normal channel list.
M3U URL vs Local M3U File
Most IPTV subscriptions provide an M3U URL — a web address your player fetches the playlist from directly, which automatically stays up to date. A local M3U file, downloaded and stored on your device, is less common for subscription services since it requires manually re-downloading it whenever the channel list changes.
How IPTV Players Use M3U Playlists
When you add an M3U URL in a compatible player app, the app downloads the playlist, organizes the channels it lists, and displays them for you to browse. Most players also refresh this periodically so your channel list stays current without you having to re-enter anything.
